Preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga gathered momentum in Sydney as the Consulate General of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) hosted a curtain-raiser event outlining an extensive programme of activities planned across New South Wales and South Australia.
The event brought together members of the community, yoga practitioners and representatives of partner organisations ahead of the global celebration on June 21.
Consul General Dr. S. Janakiraman formally launched the International Day of Yoga 2026 programme and highlighted the wide range of events scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. He also guided participants through the Common Yoga Protocol, the standard sequence of yoga practices performed during International Day of Yoga celebrations around the world.
The gathering underscored yoga’s continuing appeal as a practice that promotes physical wellbeing, mental clarity and a balanced lifestyle, while fostering a sense of community and social connection.
A number of organisations have joined hands with the Consulate and SVCC to support this year’s celebrations, reflecting the broad-based enthusiasm for yoga across Australia.
Partners include SRMD, The Art of Living, Brahma Kumaris Australia, Dhamma Yoga, the Indian Australian Association of South Australia (IAASA), Yoga Tribe, Heartfulness Australia, Southern Cross University and Sri Om Care.
Organisers said the collaboration will help deliver a diverse programme of yoga sessions and wellness activities across multiple locations in New South Wales and South Australia.
This year’s International Day of Yoga is being observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the importance of healthy lifestyle practices that support wellbeing across all stages of life.
The curtain-raiser served as an invitation for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the upcoming events and experience the benefits of yoga firsthand.
With community organisations, educational institutions and wellness groups joining the initiative, the celebrations are expected to attract strong participation and further strengthen awareness of yoga as a holistic approach to health and wellness.
The Sydney event marked the official launch of regional preparations for International Day of Yoga 2026 and set the stage for a series of programmes promoting harmony, mindfulness and healthy living throughout June.
