Melbourne, June 5 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

On the occasion of World Environment Day, a tree plantation drive was held at Sri Durga Temple in Melbourne, bringing together Indian community members and officials in support of global environmental initiatives launched by India.

Dr Sushil Kumar, Consul General of India in Melbourne, participated in the drive alongside Gurpreet Gary Verma, JP, Vice President of Sri Durga Temple, and members of the local Indian community. The activity was held under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign initiated by the Prime Minister of India.

The campaign encourages individuals to plant a tree in the name of their mother, blending environmental action with personal meaning. It is part of India’s broader strategy to promote climate awareness through initiatives such as Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and the reduction of single-use plastics.

Several saplings were planted around the temple premises. Community members said they would take responsibility for nurturing the trees and hoped the initiative would encourage wider participation in similar efforts across Melbourne.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the need to adopt sustainable practices and to raise awareness about environmental issues within the diaspora community.
