Sydney, July 14 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

In a heartfelt celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, the Consulate General of India in Sydney, together with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Bihar and Jharkhand Community Australia (BJCA), hosted a commemorative event on July 11, 2025, to honour the 150th birth anniversary of tribal icon and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

The gathering, held at the Consulate premises, brought together members of the Indian-Australian community, particularly those with roots in Bihar and Jharkhand, to pay homage to the legendary leader known for his fearless resistance against British colonial forces and his efforts to uphold the rights of tribal communities in India.

Opening the event, the Consul General reflected on the enduring legacy of Birsa Munda and the importance of remembering his contributions to India’s freedom struggle. Highlighting Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh as a national initiative aimed at recognising the pivotal role of tribal leaders in shaping India’s history, the Consul General appreciated the efforts of ICCR and BJCA in making the event a success.

Beyond paying tribute, the event served as a meaningful platform for fostering unity and cultural connection among the Indian diaspora in Sydney. It reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to promoting awareness of India’s historical narratives within the Australian multicultural landscape.

Attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in a celebration that not only honoured a national hero but also brought the community closer together. They noted that such initiatives strengthen cultural ties and help younger generations connect with their heritage.

As part of the global Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh commemorations, the Sydney event echoed a message of pride, remembrance, and continued respect for the contributions of India’s tribal leaders to its freedom and identity.
