Tamil Association of Queensland celebrates 40 years of community service, culture and unity

The Tamil Association of Queensland (TAQ) proudly celebrates a historic milestone in 2026 — 40 years of dedicated service, cultural leadership, and community unity in Queensland.

Established in 1986, TAQ has grown from a small community initiative into one of Queensland’s most respected and active multicultural organisations. For four decades, the association has served as a strong pillar for Tamil families, students, professionals, and migrants from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, and many other parts of the world who now proudly call Australia home.

The roots of the association date back to the early 1977 efforts of Tamil community leaders who worked tirelessly to support displaced Tamil migrants and refugees arriving in Australia during challenging times. In 1984, with a shared vision to preserve Tamil language, heritage, and cultural identity while building a sense of belonging in Queensland, the Tamil Association of Queensland was established and held its inaugural meeting at the Migrant Resource Centre, 120 Boundary Road, West End. In 1986 official newsletters were sent to Tamil Association of Queensland members and the first Tamil Curry night gathering of members was held in the Migrant Resource centre, West End.

Over the years, TAQ has played a vital role in promoting multiculturalism and strengthening social cohesion within the wider Queensland community. The organisation has successfully delivered cultural festivals, youth programs, women’s empowerment initiatives, educational workshops, sporting activities, community awareness campaigns, and humanitarian projects that have benefited thousands of people across the state.

The association’s events, including Deepavali celebrations, Pongal festivals, Australia Day programs, Tamil cultural showcases, and family community gatherings, have become iconic multicultural events that attract large audiences and participation from diverse communities, government representatives, and community organisations.

As part of its 40-year celebrations, TAQ hosted a grand cultural event on the 10th May 2026 at the Royal International Convention Centre showcasing the richness of Tamil heritage through traditional performances such as Parai Isai, Karagaattam, folk arts, and music. The celebration had featured renowned artists and cultural icons from India, bringing together generations of the Tamil community to honour the association’s remarkable journey and achievements.

Their presence adds great cultural significance to this landmark celebration and reflects TAQ’s continued commitment to promoting Tamil arts, heritage, and community unity in Queensland.

President of the Tamil Association of Queensland, Karthick Elangovan, said the milestone celebration reflects the strength, resilience, and unity of the Tamil community in Queensland.

“Celebrating 40 years is a proud and emotional moment for our entire community. TAQ has become more than an organisation — it is a home for many families, a place where our culture, language, and traditions continue to thrive. This milestone is a tribute to our founding members, past presidents, volunteers, sponsors, and every individual who has contributed to building this strong and united community,” he said.

Mr Elangovan also acknowledged the continued support received from the Queensland Government, multicultural organisations, local councils, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners over the years.

“Queensland’s multicultural spirit has allowed communities like ours to grow, contribute, and celebrate our identity proudly while building strong connections with the wider Australian community,” he added.

One of the most memorable highlights of our 40-year celebrations was the special Mother’s Day celebration held together with the founding members and past leaders of the Tamil Association of Queensland. It was a truly emotional and proud moment to honour the mothers, families, and pioneers whose sacrifices, strength, and dedication helped build the foundation of our community in Queensland.

For the very first time in the history of the association, past presidents of the Tamil Association of Queensland were brought together onto one stage — a powerful symbol of unity, respect, and continuity across generations of leadership. Their collective contributions over four decades have shaped TAQ into one of Queensland’s most respected multicultural organisations. The evening celebrated not only our achievements, but also the friendships, memories, and community spirit that continue to inspire future generations.

Looking ahead, TAQ remains committed to empowering young leaders, supporting women’s leadership initiatives, preserving traditional Tamil arts, promoting social inclusion, and continuing to contribute positively to Queensland’s multicultural future.

The Tamil Association of Queensland warmly invites the wider community to join in celebrating this historic milestone and honouring four decades of culture, service, and unity.
