A cultural exhibition titled ‘The Place of Indian Music and Dance in Australia’ was recently unveiled at the Performing Arts Centre as part of the celebrations marking 60 years of Music at Monash University.
The event was attended by Consul General Dr. Sushil Kumar, who spoke about the power of cultural diplomacy in deepening ties between India and Australia, and the significance of honouring shared artistic traditions.
The exhibition featured a rich display, including the Tagore collection of Indian musical instruments, and tributes to Australian choreographer Louise Lightfoot, who played a pivotal role in introducing Indian classical dance to Australian audiences. It also recognised the lifelong work of Tara Rajkumar OAM, a leading figure in promoting Indian arts in Australia.
A captivating performance by Divya Rasa Dance brought to life the elegance and diversity of Indian classical dance forms, leaving the audience deeply moved.
The event highlighted how music and dance serve as powerful bridges between cultures, and reaffirmed the growing importance of India-Australia cultural partnerships in education, the arts, and community engagement.
